Scientists at the ongoing International Conference on Biotechnology 2024 (ICOB24) in Abuja have said that technology holds enormous potential for rapid economic growth.

The week-long conference brought together scientists from different parts of the world to look at emerging biotechnologies to improve agriculture, health, environment and other sectors of the economy.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the conference, Vice President Kashim Shettima commended stakeholders for their efforts in advancing biotechnology in Nigeria.

Shettima said, “Biotechnology holds immense promise for our country’s development. It is encouraging to see professionals who have persisted and remained committed to this field despite challenges.”

The VP, who was represented by his Special Adviser on General Duties, Sen Aliyu Modibbo, called for perseverance in promoting biotechnology.

In his remarks, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, emphasised biotechnology’s potential to boost Nigeria’s GDP by increasing the total value of goods and services produced.

The minister, who was represented by a Director, Mr Agoro Olayiwola, said that biotechnology startups were significant sources of income, adding that, “With the emerging supportive ecosystem, Nigeria is poised for higher economic growth driven by licensing agreements, patents and the commercialisation of products and technologies from startups.”

The Director General (DG) of the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA), Professor Abdullahi Mustapha, said, “Biotechnology has revolutionised industries across the globe, offering innovative solutions to some of the most pressing challenges facing humanity today.”
