Digital clocks will be used in GCSE and A-Level exam halls this year because headteachers say children cannot tell the time on analogue ones any more.
Teenagers have apparently complained they are unable to read traditional clocks and said this has led to extra stress as they prepare for exams.
So digital devices, used widely on computers and tablets, will be installed in exam halls next month.
‘The current generation aren’t as good at reading the traditional clock face as older generations,’ said Malcolm Trobe, deputy general secretary at the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL).
He told Daily Telegraph: ‘They are used to seeing a digital representation of time on their phone, on their computer. Nearly everything they’ve got is digital so youngsters are just exposed to time being given digitally everywhere.’
Many people on Twitter have expressed their surprise at the move.
‘If they can’t read an analogue clock, then they shouldn’t be entered for exams,’ argued one Twitter user.
