In Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, various streets are littered with dirt, a situation that is causing serious pollution and affecting the lives of the people.
It is quite unfortunate that residents of the town dispose of wastes indiscriminately in places like Dala, Baga Road, Shuwari I and II, London Ciki, Gwange, Gomari and Bolori areas, among others.
This suggests that those in the above mentioned places are unhygienic. And there is lack of public awareness and sensitisation by authorities like the Borno State Environmental Pollution Agency (BOSEPA).
According to an environmental expert, air pollution has one of the most harmful effects on humans, which lead to illnesses; hence there is cholera in Maiduguri as a result of contaminated water.

Dumping refuse in wrong places like drainages, as well as defecating along the roadside, which are usually done by the almajirai and those who still find it hard to construct toilets in their various homes, has done a lot of harm to the environment and the people.
I urge the government agency in charge of environment maintenance to look into this situation and put a stop to this menace.
