Saudi Arabia has suspended weddings and shut several activities in the country’s entertainment sector amid fresh spike in COVID-19 cases.

The country’s interior ministry on Thursday announced that in-door entertainment venues, cinemas, gyms and sports centres will be closed for 10 days.

The ministry also banned dining in restaurants, which will only operate for takeaway orders while weddings and work conferences at hotels or other private facilities will be banned for 30 days.

NAN reports that the new measures will go into effect on Thursday evening.

The development is the latest among other measures taken by the country to tackle fresh wave of the novel disease.

It comes two days after the kingdom banned arrivals from 20 countries, including Germany, France, Britain, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates.

The directive had stipulated that only Saudi citizens, diplomats and health workers will be allowed to travel to Saudi Arabia from these countries.

According to Worldometers, the country has recorded 368,945 cases of COVID-19 with 6,386 deaths.

Saudi Arabia commenced vaccinations against the killer virus in December and has so far vaccinated about 391,000 people.
