Saturn (Green House) has emerged the overall winner of the third edition of Merosa academy inter-house sports competition held in Lokongoma area of Abuja on Saturday.

It was a close contest between the top three but Saturn garnered the highest points (61) to lift the highly coveted trophy.

Venus (Yellow) came second with 60 points while Jupiter (Blue) battled for the third position with 59 points. Mars (Red) came last with the least points, 56.

The students competed in 21 activities, including football, long jump, volleyball, golf, table tennis and track events.

Favour Nwafor of Venus House, while expressing regrets for not being able to help her House to win the competition, expressed satisfaction with her personal achievement.

The 13-year-old Junior Secondary School 3 student won a gold medal in shot-put and a silver medal in golf to help her House to a second position.

She promised to do even better in the next edition and also develop her skills in order to represent Nigeria in few years time.

Speaking with journalists at the end of the sporting activities, the Chairman of the academy, Augustine Igbuku, said: “Our objective is to have our student to recorgnise sports as fundamental and part of their educational scheme.”

While positing that sport is not all about the competition, he stressed that it also promotes team work, coordination and brain expansion.

“Our cardinal objective is to ensure that they [students] recorgnise the value of team work. The world today is significantly dependent on how much coordination and synergy people can have. So, we want to use this to promote team spirit, coordination and collaboration amongst students.”

The School’s Game Master, Augustine Ubaka expressed satisfaction with the level of competition throughout the sporting activities.

“Many students are showing interest in sports now”, he said, adding that: “We want them to appreciate sports and imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship in all their endeavors.”
