The Emir of Ilorin, Dr Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, has condemned attempt by some people in the state to disrupt prayers at the Ilorin Eid ground, saying it was an offence against God.
The emir, who is the chairman, Kwara State Council of Chiefs, made the remarks when he paid the yearly Eid-el-Kabir visit to the governor.
Gambari said efforts by miscreants to defile the “sanctity of the place of worship and deny Muslims their right to worship are condemnable and a possible invitation of the wrath of Allah”. He described the development as despicable and unfortunate.
On Thursday, during the Eid prayers, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and some dignitaries were pelted with stones and water sachets. The protesters were angry over what they called non-payment of workers outstanding salaries. The state government however insisted that salaries had been paid.
The emir advised parents to train their children not to taint “the good image of Ilorin Emirate and Kwara State as peace loving and united entities”.
Responding, Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed said despite the fact that the September federal allocation had not been received, his administration paid the state civil servants and facilitated loan for local government councils to offset workers’ salaries.
The governor promised that his administration will remain committed to completing all projects while new ones would be embarked upon as soon as earnings improve. He also reiterated the resolve of his administration to boost internally generated revenue.
