Sanitation: Kaduna to construct landfills, waste transfer stations

Governor Nasir El-rufai of Kaduna State has launched a campaign known as ‘Keep Kaduna Clean’, disclosing that the state government will construct landfills and suitable waste transfer stations in the three zones of the state.
Speaking at the flag-off of the campaign at Badarawa Primary School where heaps of refuse are dumped within the school premises, El-rufai said that the landfills and waste transfer stations would be constructed in three major urban centres of the state including Kaduna, Zaria and Kafanchan so as to process and dispose solid waste sustainably.
“My administration will not allow urban centres to become sprawling slums; at the same time, towns and cities would not be permitted to be defaced by waste. Just as we promised in the APC Kaduna Restoration Programme, that is, our party’s manifesto in charge of planning, environmental and urban management to collaborate with local governments and municipals, that we will ensure that our streets are clean and that both solid and liquid wastes are collected, processed and disposed off in an environmentally-sustainable manner.”
“While the landfills and waste transfer stations would be constructed in the urban centres, the local governments will do same for the towns and villages within their jurisdiction. We will also embark on the beautification of our neighbourhoods. Government will recover all public lands to ensure that green areas, parks and recreational facilities are provided in all towns and villages of the state,” he said.
He said the state government will invest in public enlightenment on cleanliness; adding that sanitation and environmental enforcement officers will be empowered to help advance the ‘Keep Kaduna Clean’ campaign.
