Two goals by Sadio Mane gave Liverpool a final-day victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers but it was not enough for the Reds to leapfrog Manchester City, who won the Premier League title with a win at Brighton & Hove Albion.
Starting the day one point behind Manchester City, Liverpool had a superb start at Anfield as they took the lead on 17 minutes when Mane swept the ball home from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s deflected cross.
Wolves had chances to equalise, Matt Doherty hitting the top of the bar while Alisson reacted quickly to deny Diogo Jota.
But Liverpool’s 30th victory of the season was sealed when Mane headed in, from Alexander-Arnold’s deep cross, for his 22nd goal of the campaign, which puts him joint top of the goalscorer standings.
However, despite recording an incredible 97 points, City’s win at Brighton means that Liverpool have to settle for second place, only one point behind Pep Guardiola’s champions.
Wolves finish in seventh place on 57 points.
