Sack staff involved in train ticket racketeering, Amaechi orders

It comes amidst concern over a booming racketeering of train tickets despite safeguards.

Transport minister Rotimi Amaechi has ordered the Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), Fidet Okhiria to sack any staff involved in ticket racketeering.

It comes amidst concern over a booming racketeering of train tickets despite safeguards.

Amaechi also ordered the NRC MD to investigate all allegations of ticket racketeering at the train especially at the Rigasa, Kaduna train station which has earned the reputation of the most corrupt train station in ticket racketeering.

He gave the order on Friday at the Federal Ministry of Transportation annual ministerial press briefing in Abuja.

He said all passengers must show their means of identification which must match their train tickets before boarding.

Ohkiria said restriction to two ticket purchases at a time was to block racketeering but racketeers had found ways to circumvent the restriction.

Among them, some users use multiple email accounts so “they could keep buying multiple tickets for reselling at exorbitant costs,” he said.

“We also meet every week to see how we can improve the experience and close loopholes.”

The minister also used the occasion to announce that the much-anticipated National Transportation Policy will be ready before the year ends.
