Nigerian female football giants, Rivers Angels Sunday drubbed Sunshine Queens of Akure 4-0 in the finals of the Super Six challenge decided at the Dipo Dina stadium in Ijebu-Ode to emerge champions of the 2021 Nigerian Women Professional Football League.
It will be recalled that the Nigerian women’s Football League board recently stopped the 2021 NWFL season to stage the Super Six challenge to determine the 2020/2021 Champions and the country’s representative to the WAFU B qualifiers for the inaugural edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League 2021.
Initially, some clubs kicked against the proposal but in the end, they were prevailed upon by the Nigeria Football Federation to accept the decision of the NWPL board.
Consequently, the Super Six which featured Delta Queens, Edo Queens, Rivers Angels, Bayelsa Queens, FC Robo and Sunshine Queens ended yesterday with Rivers Angels as the champions.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, the Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare assured the board of the Nigerian Women Football League of renewed support that would propel the female football league to the next level.
He said “I’m impressed with what I’ve seen today (yesterday) as we have seen female professional Football at its best.
“You will recall that I watched the last NWPL Super Four final at the Agege Stadium, Lagos where I saw a great exhibition of talents.
“I want to congratulate the overall winner and those who will represent us for the first time in the CAF Women’s Champions League. I urge them to be our worthy representatives by perhaps winning the maiden Trophy of the CAF Champions League.
“Don’t forget we have a track record in female football in Africa where we remain a dominant force. We can extend the dominance from the National team to club level”.
