The annual women’s pre-season football tournament previously known as the Flying Officer’s Cup, sponsored by the Ratels Sports Development Foundation (RSDF), has been renamed as Sheroes Cup.
This was disclosed yesterday in Abuja by the president of RSDF, Barrister Paul Edeh, during a press briefing to unveil plans for this year’s edition of the tournament that debuted in 2019 as Naija Ratels pre-season Cup.

The name of the tournament was later changed to Flying Officer’s Cup to immortalise the late first female helicopter combat fighter in the Nigeria Air Force, Tolulope Arotile.
He said “For the past two seasons, we have been holding the pre-season tournament under the aegis of the Flying Officers Cup. But today, I’m here to announce that we are deviating from that park.
“Henceforth, the pre-season tournament is no longer to be known as the Flying Officer’s Cup, but rather to be known as the Sheroes Cup.
“It is the same tournament but the name change is principally to give us the opportunity to celebrate more women who have achieved no mean feats in their respective fields over the years.
“That’s why moving forward, the name and the permanent name for the pre-season tournament will be the Sheroes Cup.”
Edeh also disclosed that for the 2022 edition which as usual would feature the top female football clubs in Nigeria and a club from one of the neighbouring countries, there will be no money to call cash prize but subsidy and support for all the participating teams.
The 2022 Sheroes pre-season tournament is slated for November 3-13 in Abuja.
