The Rotary Club of Abuja Maitama over the weekend offered medical outreach to more than 300 residents of Galuwyi community, an underserved urban slum community in Bwari area council.

Health workers on the outreach offered glucose and blood tests, blood pressure checks, tests for malaria and HIV, and provided free treatment for malaria, antihypertensive drugs, iron supplements, painkillers, contraceptives, sanitary towels, ointments and creams.

All commodities are estimated to have cost around N1 million, provided in partnership with Oak Foundation Initiative and NNPC Medical Services for Rotary’s Family Health Day.

The club’s president Winifred Ogbebo said residents in the area have “little or no access” to health care, prompting the outreach to bridge gaps.

The club “adopted” Galwuyi as beneficiary of its social responsibility—and has built a health centre, a residence for health workers and sunk three boreholes in the community.

“There’s no satisfaction greater than impacting lives. Governments across the world cannot do it alone, that’s why we keep having annual budgets,” said Ogbebo.

“Come, let’s join hands and make the world a better and brighter place. We have achieved so much in our polio eradication efforts today because of the joy of partnership.”
