Robbers attack journalist, rape female passengers in Benue

A gang of armed robbers on Tuesday night dispossessed passengers, including a journalist, on the Naka-Makurdi road, of their valuables and raped the female passengers.

The journalist, Aar Terna Amos, who is the Benue State correspondent of the National Record newspaper, and the other passengers were returning from Otukpo.

Amos, who narrated his ordeal to colleagues in Makurdi, said the attack occurred on Tuesday at about 9pm a few kilometres from Makurdi.

He said that the robbers who were about 10 in number raped two female passengers during the operation and also collected all their phones and other valuables while threatening to kill anyone who did not have a handset or money.

He explained that, “We took off from Otukpo at 7:30pm because there were no passengers at the park because of the increment in transport fare as a result of the high cost of fuel. We were coming without any challenge until we saw a vehicle in front of us close to Adaka, a village before Makurdi. We thought it was a security check point until we ran into the robbers.”

Contacted, the police spokeswoman in the state, SP Catherine Anene, told our correspondent on telephone that she was yet to get a report from the concerned DPO.
