The Director-General of the Raw material Research and Development Council (RMRDC), Prof. Hussaini Doko Ibrahim, has called on young people to avail themselves of the opportunity in the raw materials value chain to develop their skills to become self-reliant.

He spoke in Abuja at the 6th annual raw materials quiz competition for secondary schools in Nigeria, on Friday.

Daily Trust reports that this is part of RMRDC ‘catch-them-young’ programme for youths.

Ibrahim, represented by a Director in the Council, Emmanuel Kwaya, said the aim of the competition was to encourage the youth to participate in the production of locally made goods and assess their knowledge on available local raw materials.

He said the quiz competition would instill the culture of using raw materials in science, technology and innovation in the youth as the country is endowed with great mineral resources.

The Managing Director/CEO of Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL), Abbas Umar Masanawa, said the competition aligns with NIRSAL’s vision and mission of promoting the development and transformation of the agricultural sector in Nigeria.

The Director-General/CEO, Energy Commission of Nigeria, Mustapha Abdullahi, said: “RMRDC, through this event, would help to spur Nigeria’s Industrialization and economic growth in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s agenda for Renewed Hope.”

Some of the students who participated in the competition appreciated the RMRDC for the opportunity to be exposed to the natural resources around them and promised to utilize the knowledge acquired.

At the end of the competition, Oritamefa Baptist Model School, Oyo State came 1st, HillCity College, Ilorin came 2nd, while Federal Government College, Okposi, Ebonyi State took 3rd position with catch prizes ranging from one million, five hundred thousand to three hundred thousand naira respectively.
