Rivers United rose to the top of the table after an empathic 3-1 away win over troubled MFM in the 2021 NPFL Week 7 fixture played yesterday at the Agege Township stadium in Lagos.

MFM who suffered a 0-2 defeat at Rangers thought they could bounce back against Rivers United but the visitors proved to be too strong for the hosts.

Chijioke Akuneto, a former player of MFM opened the scoring for the visitors in the 35th minute and left-footed Kayode Ishaq doubled the lead in the second minute of first half added time.

On resumption, former Plateau United midfielder, Uche Onwuasonya scored the third goal for the ‘Pride of Rivers’ in the 82nd minute before Tosin Olubobola pulled one back for the hosts with six minutes left to play in regulation time.

The win lifted Rivers United to the summit with 15 points from seven matches but their reign may be short lived as victory for Remo Stars against Abia Warriors today will  see the ‘Pride of Rivers’ drop to the second position.

And Wikki Tourists who suffered a 1-2 loss at home to Remo Stars last week bounced back to winning ways in style as they shocked miserable Dakkada 1-0 in Benin City where the Uyo side is camped following their banishment from Uyo.

Abubakar Aliyu’s goal in the 65th minute was all Wikki Tourists needed to atone for the week 6 home defeat in the hands of Remo Stars.

At the New Jos Township stadium, Plateau United topped Nasarawa United 3-2 in the north central derby. Former Nasarawa United player, Haggai Katoh put Plateau United ahead in the 7th minute but veteran striker, Uche Ihuarulam restored parity for the visitors in the 38th minute.

Five minutes into the second half, Jesse Akila restored Plateau United’s lead with a header, Mohammed Zulkifilu made it three  in the 57th minute before Tochukwu Michael reduced the deficit for Nasarawa United from the spot five minutes from regulation time.

Elsewhere, Niger Tornadoes defeated 3SC 2-0 in Ilorin, Gombe United lost 0-2 at Sunshine Stars while Lobi Stars forced Katsina United to a barren draw at the Muhammadu Dikko stadium.

The remaining fixtures between Enyimba and Akwa United, Remo Stars vs Abia Warriors, Heartland against Rangers and Kwara United versus Kano Pillars to be staged today in Aba, Ilorin, Okigwe and Oshogbo will conclude week 7 matches.
