Rivers United’s bid for continental football in 2022 received a big boost when they defeated visiting Kano Pillars 2-0 at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt in one of the NPFL week 26 matches played yesterday.

Striker Sunday Adetunji opened the scoring in the 10th minute of the game while Paul Acquah made it 2 -0 in the 49th minute.

Despite the loss, Pillars remain top of the table with 48 points but may be overtaken by Akwa United who are on 46 points, if they win against Heartland FC today at the Nest of Champions in Uyo.

In Nnewi, struggling FC IfeanyiUbah dented Kwara United’s title credentials as the ‘Afonja Warriors’  fell 2-1. Ekene Awazie scored from the spot in the 14th minute before Jude Steven levelled scores for his side in the 28th minute.

However, Awazie got his brace and the winner in the 86th minute to push down Kwara United from third to fifth position on the log.

In Makurdi, Martins Ossy’s goal in the 22nd minute was all Lobi Stars needed to beat Enugu Rangers 1-0, relegation threatened Sunshine Stars edged Dakkada by a lone goal in Akure just as Wikki Tourists picked a point in Kaduna after they forced Jigawa Stars to a 1-1 draw.

And after a barren first half in Lafia, Warri Wolves plummeted in the second half as they were thrashed 3-1 by Nasarawa United.

Lanky striker, Silas Nwankwo scored a brace in the space of three minutes, David Chimieze’s own goal made it three for the ‘Solid Miners’ before substitute Sunday Williams’ acrobatic goal in the 69th minute reduced the deficit for Wolves.

In Jos, defending champions, Plateau United condemned Katsina United to their 14th defeat with a 2-0 victory while Enyimba subdued hard fighting Adamawa United 2-1 in Aba.
