David Emmanuella and Barikpoa Prosper, from Community Primary School in Rivers State have emerged winners at the grand finale of the 6th edition of Lafarge Africa National Literacy Competition (LANLC), which was held in Lagos.
Students from Ogun and Enugu states emerged second and third respectively at the end of the competition themed ‘Bridging the Literacy Gap Together’. The winners were awarded scholarships, trophies and various gifts.
Launched in 2014 as a flagship Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) intervention by Lafarge Africa Plc, the literacy competition has grown to become an annual national initiative positively impacting children and teachers across Nigeria.
The Chairman of Lafarge Africa Plc, Mr. Mobolaji Balogun, described literacy as crucial to the development of any society.
“We believe that a sustainable future will enable growth, global peace, security and technological advancement. We need to prepare our children for a future where they will compete globally with ease,” he said,
The Country CEO of Lafarge Africa, Mr. Michel Puchercos, who also spoke at the event disclosed that the company has touched over 700,000 primary school pupils in 1,665 schools across 544 local government areas in six years.
