Rivers State Police Wednesday tear gassed and dispersed thousands of teachers who had converged on the Liberation Stadium in Port Harcourt to collect their letters of employment on the ground that the gathering was aimed at carrying out a protest against President Jonathan.
The state Ministry of Education recently engaged 13,000 teachers to teach in the newly constructed model primary schools built across the state.
The deputy speaker in an interview said the action of the police was partisanship taken too far.
He condemned the action of the Commissioner of Police Joseph Mbu, who he alleged has turned Rivers State into a “police state”.
“The police commissioner is working assiduously to frustrate Governor Amaechi’s administration by preventing a development programme that has nothing to do with PDP crisis in the state,” he said.
Kwanee added: “The Obuah led PDP has been organizing political rallies without any disturbance by the police not minding the fact that such rallies are in contradiction with INEC’s regulation and also capable of breaching peace considering the volatile situation in the state”.
He called on well meaning Nigerians to rise up and condemn the development, as according to him, Rivers is gradually sliding into a state of anarchy.
