Rico Swavey, Da Grin, other celebrities who died in road accident

A number of Nigerian celebrities both in the music as well as film industry have at one point been involved in car accidents. While some made it unscathed, some got hurt in the process while others died during the incident. 

Daily Trust list five Nigerian stars whose lights were cut short as a result of car accidents.

The most recent of such unfortunate incidents is that of a former Big Brother Naija season 3 housemate, Patrick Fakoya popularly known as Rico Swavey.

His fellow ex-housemate, Alex Asogwa aka Alex Unusual, shared the sad news on her Twitter handle on Tuesday about his demise.

According to Alex Unusual, the accident occurred “hours ago”, adding that the doctors were trying to resuscitate Rico Swavey as of the time she left the hospital.

“Good morning sweethearts. Please put @iamricoswavey in your prayers today. He was involved in a ghastly accident hours ago and the doctors are still trying to resuscitate him as I just left the hospital. It is really critical. I’m staying positive. #PrayForRicoSwavey”

Fellow colleagues also took to their handles to request financial donations towards his health. But in the early hours of Tuesday, Tobi Bakare posted about his death which came as a rude shock to many.

“This is how I will always remember you, rest in peace my brother, thanks to all for your prayers, donations, and care. God knows best.”

Da Grin

On April 14, 2010, one of Nigeria’s foremost Yoruba rappers, Dagrin, was involved in a ghastly car accident in front of Alakara Police Station, Mushin, Lagos.

According to reports, his car — a Nissan Maxima smashed into a stationary truck. Eight days after the accident, the rapper died at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital; (LUTH), Idi Araba.

Known for his famous style of infusing English and Yoruba in his rap lyrics, the singer died at 25.

Chris Jeyibo

Chris Jeyibo, owner of Koga Studios was also involved in a car accident which led to his death.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Friday, October 7, 2016, after his white Range Rover SUV rammed into a parked truck along Magodo road, Lagos.

Jeyibo was on his way home when the tragic incident happened. Koga Entertainment, which provides media and entertainment-related services, is the parent company of Koga Studios, KogaXtra.TV, Koga Lounge, Koga Hall and KICL Clothing.

CD John

Fast-rising Nigerian comedian, Chijioke John popularly known as CD John was pronounced dead on March 24, 2011.

He passed on at St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos after a fatal car crash while returning from Harrysong‘s debut album listening party in a convoy of three cars, including a car of the Gulder Ultimate Search Season 7 winner Kunle Oluwaremi.

Ahmed Ishola Durojaiye

Yoruba actor, Ahmed Ishola Durojaiye, popularly known as Alasari, died on March 20, 2011, at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta.

His newly acquired Toyota SUV somersaulted at the Onipepeye area of Lagos/Abeokuta Expressway on his way to Lagos for a television show.

He was buried on March 15 in his town, Ita Elega which is in Abeokuta.
