Reverse electricity, petrol price or face indefinite industrial action – TUC to Buhari

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has given President Muhammadu Buhari seven days ultimatum to reverse the hike in prices of electricity, petrol, and all other social services in the country or witness an indefinite industrial action and national protest from Wednesday, September 23, 2020.

Aside from the reversal, the union is demanding for the provision of adequate and quality healthcare and education for all Nigerians to save the poor and the vulnerable at all levels.

This was the resolve of the TUC at a meeting of its organs on Monday.

In a statement signed by the TUC President, Comrade Quadri Olaleye, and General Secretary, Comrade (Barr) Musa Lawal Ozigi, the TUC, along with civil societies and allies sympathetic to the sufferings of Nigerians warned that an indefinite industrial action and national protest will commence on the September 23 deadline.

Com. Olaleye pointed out that the sudden increase in Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) pump price without any definitive and concrete efforts to make the refineries functional has a devastating multiplier effect on the working people and their families.

TUC insisted that the federal government need to address “Corruption in government agencies such as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), and the federal ministry of health over lack of transparency on how funds received in the fight against COVID-19 were spent.”
