The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) yesterday called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to return the lost glory of all 774 local government areas in the country with a view to resolving all security challenges the country is facing.
It also appealed to the federal government to consider the establishment of the National Institute for Local Government Studies under the Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs.
President of NULGE, Akeem Olatunji, who canvassed these during the maiden edition of NULGE week in Abuja, explained that setting up the institute would scale up the skills of local government practitioners, political leaders and other gate keepers.
Olatunji said, “NULGE is of the opinion that every security issue is local and the solution to it is local. We, therefore, clamour for the establishment of community police.

“All the breakthroughs in areas of counter-terrorism, banditry etc. were achieved through the involvement of locals. The federal government should approve that LG identifies, organises, register and kit experienced local guards, hunters, vigilantes, volunteers, train and license them to carry arms for community policing.”
The union leader also advocated that the traditional rulers be given roles to play regarding stemming the tide of insecurity, saying Nigeria can only navigate through present predicament if insecurity is addressed.
