Mr. Akinola, a former President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) was rescued at Iboro, a border area of Yewa South local government area of Ogun.
Police Spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi confirmed to Daily Trust on phone that the police intercepted the gang at about 7.00pm and safely rescued Akinola, his daughter and driver. They were on their way back to Abeokuta as at press time.
“We are happy and glad to report that our highly revered Primate Peter Akinola, his daughter and driver have been recovered from the fleeing gang around Iboro a border town with Republic of Benin.
The gang opened fire after discovering the high powerful security beef up in the area and because of the sensitive of the victims we did the needful and intercepted them. They however made away with the vehicle, but our men are still after them.”
He was taken at about 3.00pm yesterday at his Peter Akinola centre for youth training in Onijanganjangan along the old Lagos/Abeokuta road.
The centre is meant to train youths in various technical and vocational skills free of charge. The Anglican family was earlier thrown into confusion in Abeokuta, as preparations for Christmas church services were reported to have reached an advance stage before news of the kidnap rand out.
