Residents of Aguda, Ijesha, Itire and Adetola areas of Surulere, Lagos, are panicking over attacks and counter-attacks by members of rival cult gangs, Aiye and Eiye confraternities.
At least two persons are feared killed and many others injured when renewed hostility among the rival cult groups ensued.
Anti-riot policemen have been drafted to the area to ensure normalcy is restored.
But while the police were patrolling major streets, the cultists engaged in a gun battle along the canal between Ijesha and Adetola areas.
The renewed battle started over the killing of the leader of one of the gangs identified as Munero, who the police described as a serial killer.
It was learnt that Munero was killed on Sunday by a rival gang that had been stalking him.
Muyiwa Adejobi, Lagos State PPRO, confirmed the arrest of 12 suspects in connection with a clash between youths in Aguda, Surulere on January 24, 2021.
He said the incident claimed the life of one Munero, who he said, was a serial killer in the area.
He said: “We have restored normalcy to the area as the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Hakeem Odumosu, has deployed additional men under the supervision of the Area C Commander Surulere, ACP Fatai Tijani. Arms were recovered from the suspects.”
