The Kaduna State Government has said the 137 rescued Kuriga students will be reunited with their families today.

Dr Abdulkadir Meyere, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), made this disclosure yesterday during a meeting between some parents and the schoolchildren at a government facility in the state.

The students were abducted from Kuriga Primary and Junior Secondary School in Chikun LGA of Kaduna State on March 7 and were rescued after 16 days in captivity.

The military handed over 131 of the rescued children to the state governor, Uba Sani, on Monday and said the remaining six students who were hospitalised would be handed over to the state as soon as the doctors certified them fit.

Although the parents had not been able to meet their children since their return was announced, some were allowed to visit the rescued schoolchildren yesterday at the government facility.

The SSG reassured the parents during the meeting that their children would be handed over to them on Thursday, following the governor’s return from a trip.

He said, “The Governor himself would have loved to be here today but he has gone to Abuja on an equally important assignment. But he has said that he would not allow them to go back to Kuriga until he comes back tomorrow to personally bid them farewell.

“By the grace of God, your children will be handed over to you tomorrow.”

It was gathered that the parents drove from Kuriga village in about six Gulf vehicles to meet with the children under the supervision of some top government officials.

One of the residents, who accompanied his relations to the venue, Aminu Kuriga, confirmed to Daily Trust that the parents arrived at the facility Wednesday afternoon.

“They came in about six vehicles, to see the children. It was an emotional scene as the children hugged their parents in the presence of the government officials,” he said.

According to him, there were top government officials present when the parents arrived and briefly interacted with the children.
