The House of Representatives has mandated the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to ensure all traffic lights within the Abuja metropolis are working.

It also mandated the Federal Road Safety Corps and other traffic management agencies to ensure that offenders of traffic regulations, no matter their status, are apprehended and prosecuted to serve as deterrent to others.

This followed the adoption of a motion moved by Rep Yusuf Tajudeen at plenary.

He said there had been an increased violation of traffic lights by different categories of motorists within the territory.

According to him, such flagrant violation and disregard of traffic rules by both commercial and private drivers have led to loss of lives and property within the metropolis.

He said available data showed that Abuja had the highest cases of road traffic violations amongst capital cities in Africa and other developing world.
