The House of Representatives has mandated its Committee on National Security and Intelligence to investigate the suicide bombings in Gwoza LGA of Borno State which has continued to claim lives after the earlier casualties.

This followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance moved by Rep Ahmed Jaha Babawo (APC, Borno) at the plenary on Tuesday.

Presenting the motion, Jaha, who represents Damboa/Gwoza/Chibok Federal Constituency, condemned the bombings last Saturday in which suicide bombers targeted a wedding, a funeral and a hospital.

The lawmaker said the terror attacks resulted in the death of not less than 30 lives and caused immeasurable grief and suffering to the affected community with many battling with their lives in various hospitals.

He stressed the need for security agencies to increase intelligence gathering and community engagement to avert a recurrence.

Rep Jaha said, “Intelligence gathering is a critical tool in the fight against terrorism, and it is essential that our security forces get the necessary resources and support to gather timely and actionable intelligence to prevent attacks before they occur.

“Community engagement plays a vital role in building trust and cooperation between security forces and residents. By fostering strong relationships with communities, our security agencies can gather valuable information, identify potential threats and disrupt terrorist activities before they escalate into violence.”

Contributing to the motion, a former Deputy Speaker of the House, Ahmed Idris Wase, called for serious efforts to fight terrorism and urged the federal government to go after the sponsors of all forms of criminality across the country.

Other lawmakers who contributed to the motion also called for more efforts to tackle the resurgence of suicide bombing which they said had been tackled head on in the past.
