Two bills aimed at regulating the activities of Students Union Governments (SUGs) in Nigerian tertiary institutions, as well as prohibiting the use of army uniform colours by the public, were reintroduced at the House of Representatives.
The bills tagged “Students Union Activities (Control and Regulation) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2019″ and ”Army Colour (Prohibition of Use) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2019”, were respectively sponsored by Nicholas Ossai (PDP, Delta) and Solomon Maren (PDP, Plateau).
The bills were among the over 40 bills reintroduced from the immediate past 8th House for reconsideration in the current 9th House.
According to the bills, when passed and assented to by the President, most of the activities of student unions in various tertiary institutions in Nigeria would be subjected to government regulation.
Similarly, it will become a punishable offense for a civilian citizen to use colours reserved for the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Ossai, sponsor of the Students Union Regulation (amendment) Bill, was himself a student unionist at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he graduated with a degree in Agricultural Economics.
