The House of Representatives has passed a bill to regulate the establishment and operations of orphanages in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for a second reading.

The bill was passed after a voice vote after it was presented on the floor of the House at plenary on Tuesday by its sponsor, Samuel Adejare (APC, Lagos).

Presenting the motion, he said, the bill seeks to curb the proliferation of unregistered orphanages that have led to the recurrence of illegal activities of operating baby factories and a place where girls are being sexually exploited.

The bill was titled: “A Bill for an Act to Establish the Federal Capital Territory Orphanage (Registration and Regulatory) Agency to Regulate the Establishment and Administration of Orphanages and other Related Institutions in the Federal Capital Territory of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; and for Related Matters. (HB.857)”.

The bill was referred to the House Committee on FCT, Area Councils and Auxilliary matters.
