Reps give perm sec 48 hours to refund N3.9m

The House of Representatives Public Account Committee (PAC) has directed the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transportation, Sabiu Zakari 48hours to refund N3.935 million into government coffers.

The committee, chaired by Kingsley Chinda (PDP, Rivers) said failure to refund the money, would leave the committee with no option than to refer the matter to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The committee’s directive was hinged on a query raised by the office of the Auditor General of the Federation, over alleged extra budgetary spending by three agencies under the ministry amounting to N1.195billion in 2015.

The panel had at an earlier meeting directed that the permanent secretary be remanded in security custody, pending payment of the money.

But lawmakers changed that position following an appeal by the senior government official.
