Germany has promised to support Nigeria in her drive to address the ailing electricity supply in the country through renewable energy.
This was disclosed during the German Energy Conference which took place in Lagos.

Renewable energy offers a sustainable, considerably cheap and climate friendly alternative to bridge the country’s huge energy deficit.

“Nigeria offers the biggest decentralized renewable energy market in Sub-Saharan Africa with tons of untapped potential in that regard. Cooperation in the field of energy in particular has been an integral part of both countries’ bilateral relations. Programmes, partnerships and initiatives such as the Nigerian-German Energy Partnership (NGEP, enacted in 2008) and the Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP) of the GIZ have contributed to improving Nigeria’s energy landscape in the field of renewable energy and energy efficiency”, said the Deputy Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Ms. Alexandra Herr, during the conference.

The one-day energy conference showcased the expertise and latest energy solutions from Germany, and provided a forum for prime networking, experts opinions on ideal hybrid renewable energy sources (solar, biogas, CNG etc), dialogues on current developments and the policy environment for smart energy solutions in Nigeria. With focus on renewable energies and hybrid energy solutions for industrial and commercial use, the German Energy Conference built on the information event and fact-finding mission to Germany for Nigerian energy experts that took place in Berlin in November 2018.

The aim of the trade mission according to Mr. Duke Benjamin, the Deputy Delegate of the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Nigeria (AHK Nigeria) was to provide a platform for bilateral business collaboration between German manufacturers and their Nigerian counterparts, promote technical/projects partnerships, technology transfer and adaptation, and exports promotion.

The AHK Trade Mission is part of the German Energy Solutions Initiative which supports small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) offering energy solutions in the fields of renewable energy, energy efficiency, smart grids and storage technologies. Funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), the mission was implemented by the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Nigeria (AHK Nigeria) in cooperation with the Renewable Energy Academy (RENAC) AG Berlin and the Project Development Programme (PDP) of the German Energy Solutions Initiative.
