President Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on the occasion laid wreaths in commemoration of the 2021 Armed Forces Remembrance Day at the National Arcade Eagle Square in Abuja to honour fallen heroes.

Dignitaries who also laid wreaths at the ceremony include Senate President Ahmed Lawan, Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila of the House of Representatives, and Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Tanko Muhammad, among others.

Buhari, who honoured the memory of the nation’s fallen heroes and veterans, recounted their sacrifices during the First and Second World Wars; the Nigerian Civil War and Peace Support Operations around the world.

The president, while speaking on the support for families of members of the Armed Forces who died in active service, said the unfortunate cost of the fight against insurgency and other internal security challenges was the unavoidable losses of lives of some gallant compatriots.

He hailed charity organisations that engaged in the noble cause of bringing succour to the families of fallen heroes and veterans.

Highlight of the ceremony was the signing of Register by President Buhari who later released pigeons for the Armed Forces Remembrance Day which signifies peace and unity of the country.

Jumaat prayers and Interdenominational Church Service had earlier been held for the 2021 Remembrance Day Celebration where the need for Nigerians to honour the sacrifices of the men and women of the Armed Forces had been stressed.
