Musa was born on the 16th of January, 1935 at Bida, and served the nation in ways too numerous to mention here. He retired at a point until his appointment as Chairman, National Population Commission (NPC) during which period the ‘1991’ Census was conducted. In 1994, he was appointed Chairman, Constitutional Conference Commission and was later appointed member, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in 1998. During his sojourn in public service which spanned over four decades, he received several ad-hoc appointments (Including non-public service appointments). Then in 1989 to 1999 he was Chairman of the reconstituted Economic and Social Advisory Council of Niger State (ESACON), a position he held until his death on the 19th November, 2008. Both while on active service and on retirement, he was deeply involved in community services and developmental projects.

Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, the frontline politician has this to say: “Shehu Musa discharged all the responsibilities entrusted on him diligently. He made selflessness and dedication to duty the hallmark of his life.” Second Republic Governor of Lagos State, Alhaji (Dr.) Lateef Jakande commented thus: “He was a patriot and a good administrator, who discharged his duties efficiently for his country.” Former Presidential Aspirant and founder of Nigerian Advance Party (NAP), Chief Tunji Braithwiate put it this way: “I knew him closely when he was Secretary to the Government of President Shagari. He was a courteous, respectful and highly intelligent Public Servant. He was indeed an illustrious son of this country”.

A memorial lecture in his honour was organised by Gamji Members’ Association (an NGO that immortalises the exemplary leadership qualities of late Sir Ahmadu Bello and other past national leaders). Quite a number of his colleagues, associates, relations and guests were in attendance. In his submission, the Chairman of the occasion and a former colleague of his, Chief Philip Asiodu has this to say on him: “Be is a de-tribalised Nigerian who is open, friendly and helpful to people from all parts of the country”. Professor Jonathan Ndagi, a former Vice Chancellor of FUT, Minna and an associate of his said in a position of responsibility, he was always principled, forthright, honest and fair.

Musa was always relentless and insistent that to get a good result, you must be dedicated and honest to the set goals. In one of our interactions, he was quick to educate us on the fact that “the best things in life are usually free” and that they are readily available, namely; honesty, truth, respect for others, loyalty, care and fear of God.

Late Shehu Musa was therefore a gifted leader who was always eager to see to the development of this country. May Allah grant him Aljanna Firdausi. Ameen.

Isa, National Secretary, Gamji Members’ Association, sent this piece in from Minna, Niger State
