Religious leaders aid corruption by feigning ignorance and maintaining silence over the scourge which continues to retard the growth of the country, the Deputy Secretary-General, Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Professor Salisu Shehu, has said.

Speaking at an annual symposium with religious leaders from North Central states on combating corruption through interfaith platforms holding in Kano, he said scholars should be seen to be speaking out against corruption no matter who might be offended.

He said speaking out against corruption does not imply being confrontational with authorities, but rather decorum and tactics should be deployed in prevailing on the leadership on such matters for the benefit of the wider society.

He said remaining silent is like supporting corruption, adding that past scholars like Danfodio led with examples that our present scholars should emulate.

“It is disheartening to see our present scholars competing in luxury with the political class despite having no any recognised means of income. This shouldn’t be the case,” he said.

Also speaking, Malam Ibrahim Muazzam, Adviser MacArthur Foundation Grantees, said corruption has eaten deep into the society and must be addressed through collaborative efforts of all.

In his remarks, Pastor Henry Ijoman said places of worship should strive to be industrious with sources of income rather than depending on handouts from people whose source of income are questionable.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Director of Mambayya House, Professor Ismaila Zango, represented by Dr Suleiman Samaila said the symposium intends to come up with ideas that will lead to the creation of synergy among religious organisations and increased commitment of religious leaders to the drive against corruption.
