An advocacy group, The Truth – Nothing More, Nothing Else, has called on the federal government to immediately release the suspended governor of the Central Bank, Godwin Emefiele, pending his trial.
Daily Trust reports that Emefiele was suspended from office by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on June 10 and was immediately taken into custody by the Department of State Services (DSS).
The group, in a statement signed by its Project Coordinator, Alhaji Kanabe Zubairu, said Emefiele’s continuous detention is unacceptable because it is against his civil rights to be charged to court within 48 hours of arrest.
“We suspect that Emefiele had stepped on powerful toes with Buhari’s currency change in January this year. The change was said to be targeted at depriving politicians of the opportunity to buy votes with cash. It must also be said that the currency change was a Buhari government policy, not a Godwin Emefiele policy.

“We call for the release of Godwin Emefiele from detention while the trial continues. It is a test for the democratic credentials of the Tinubu government,” it added.
