The International Red Cross Society (ICRC) have distributed the sum of N15,450,000 to about 300 vulnerable households in Kano state.
The cash palliative distribution was meant to cushion the effect of COVID-19 pandemic to the beneficiaries, mostly women and people with disabilities.
Speaking during the flag off of the distribution, the ICRC state Executive Secretary, Musa D. Abdullahi said 100 beneficiaries have been selected from the three Local Government areas of Nassarawa, Tarauni and Rimin Gado.
He said, “We selected the beneficiaries from these areas by identifying the most vulnerable and the most needy in these areas using traditional rulers.
“Each of these beneficiaries, mostly elderly women and widows and people with disabilities have received the sum of N51,500 each to cushion the effect of the pandemic to start new businesses.
“The distribution is taking place in all states of the federation and 300 beneficiaries received it. It’s supported by the ICRC, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Society (IFRC) and the German government,” Abdullahi said.
He then urged the beneficiaries to use the gesture judiciously, adding that ICRC has been in the frontline of collection and distribution of palliatives in the state.
Two of the beneficiaries who spoke to Daily Trust, Muhammad Hassan from Nassarawa Local Government and Aisha Aliyu Sale thanked the donors, promising to use it to set up new businesses.
Daily Trust reports that the flagging off ceremony had in attendance representatives of Federal Fire Service Kano State Fire Service, state’s Ministry of Women Affairs and Kano emirate council.
