The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has commissioned a 30 kilowatts peak (KWp) solar hybrid power mini-grid in Mbela-Lagaje community in Mayobelwa Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

Residents who were elated said they depended on electricity in Mayobelwa town, another town for their activities.

Speaking at the commissioning on Tuesday, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of REA, Ahmad Salihijo Ahmed said the project was part of REA’s off-grid solution to energy problems in rural areas across Nigeria.

Salihijo noted that the intervention would open new business and employment opportunities in the community, calling on residents to explore the benefits derivable from renewable energy.

“Powering this community is another testament to the impact of REA’s off-grid solutions. I’m delighted that with this intervention, Mbela-Lagaje will witness an upgrade in its socioeconomic status.”

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Power, Gabriel Suswam who was represented by Senator Aishatu Ahmed said the 9th Assembly had understood the role of electricity in national development and therefore worked in synergy with the federal government to support REA.

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri commended the federal government for completing the electrification project in the state.

“For me, this is what true equity feels like; when the government at the centre ensures that development impact is evident in the nooks and crannies of Nigeria.”
