The 2015/2016 Nigeria Professional Football League came to an end yesterday with Rangers FC of Enugu emerging champions after whitewashing El-Kanemi Warriors 4-0 in their last match.
Chisom Egbuchulam’s hat-trick propelled the ‘Flying Antelopes’ to their first league title in 32 years but celebration was low-keyed after Ifeanyi Egwim was rushed to hospital in an ambulance following a collision with El-Kanemi goalkeeper Kazeem Yekeen in stoppage time.
Chisom Egbuchulam scored Rangers opener from the spot in the third minute after Clement Bobby’s shot on target was handled in the box by an El-Kanemi-defender.
After wasting several begging chances, Rangers finally doubled their lead in the 42nd minute as another scintillating move saw Osas Okoro getting the ball in the box before firing home.
At the resumption of the second half, Rangers sustained pressure on El-Kanemi with Egbuchulam grabbing his brace in style in the 64th minute before bagging his hat-trick from the spot after Egwim was brought down dangerously by Yekeen.
Rangers took home a giant trophy and N40m cheque from the League Management Company and would represent Nigeria in next year’s CAF Champions League.
Rivers United also emerged runners up after beating Akwa United 2-1 in Uyo to pick the other CAF Champions League just as Wikki Tourists defeated Sunshine Stars 2-0 in Bauchi to earn for themselves a CAF Confederation Cup ticket.
