Some youths took to the streets on Saturday to protest Thursday’s massacre of 88 people by bandits in eight villages of Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, Daily Trust on Sunday gathered.
It is also learnt that the rampaging youth set bonfires on Saturday in the streets of Riba town thereby, blocking the roads for motorists and other road users.
The irate youths blocked the state governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, who went to the council to condole with the bereaved families.
All efforts to contact the Special Adviser on Media to the governor, Yahaya Sarki, proved abortive as his number was not going through neither did he respond to the text message sent to him.
Also contacted, the state police command’s spokesman, DSP Abubakar, said he would get back to this reporter but until the time of filing this report, he did not call back.
Meanwhile, death toll from the massacre of villagers by bandits in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State has risen to 88.
Earlier, 66 people were reported to have been killed in the volatile area, which had suffered a series of attacks by the motorcycle-riding bandits in the last six months.
In April, nine policemen, among them was a divisional police officer in the local government area, were killed while responding to a distressed call.
Speaking to Daily Trust, a resident of Gaya village, who pleaded anonymity, said the bandits invaded their communities on about 500 motorcycles, with each carrying one or two passengers.
He added that the gun-wielding bandits arrived around 4pm and did not leave until some minutes past 8pm.
He revealed that majority of the victims were youths between the ages of 20 and 30.
The spokesperson of the state police command, DSP Nafiu Abubakar, confirmed the recovery of 88 dead bodies after the massacre that took place on Thursday.
According to him, the police are still searching for more corpses while the command had already dispatched a detachment of its officers and men, with a view to restoring normalcy.
“The killing took place in Koro, Kimpi, Gaya, Dimi, Zutu, Rafin Gora and Iguenge villages, all in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area,” he said.
