The Dean, Faculty of Islamic Studies, Bayero University Kano (BUK), Professor Ahmed Murtala has charged the Islamic clerics to join politics and offer their contribution to bringing about positive development in Nigeria.
He made the call at the Ramadan Annual Lecture organised by the Islamic Forum of Nigeria, with the theme: ‘Responsible leadership as a pillar of the society,’ which held at its headquarters in Kano on Sunday.

He said religious clerics had a significant role to play in choosing the right leaders in Nigeria and they should not fold their hands and watch.
“If care is not taken and good changes are not made, what is happening today will reflect in the future and that will not help us at all. I, therefore, recommend that people should strive to produce good and quality leaders. If people of old age and the youth will not come out to vote for the right leadership the situation will never change,” he added.
The Chairman of Kano State Council of Ulama, Ibrahim Khalil said the north needed critical stakeholders and elders who would always choose the best leader for success to be recorded in the region.
He said most times people don’t know their power and influence towards the success or otherwise of a leader, adding that community leaders should openly identify the good leaders to vote for during elections.
