Umar who spoke to Daily Trust in Dutse said he was forced to give the advice in view of the attack and insults on the person of Yakasai and his family on Face Book and other social media because of his support for President Goodluck Jonathan 2015 ambition.
“I am speaking in my capacity as someone who considers Alhaji Tanko Yakasai as a father figure because he was a political associate of my late father. He and my father were protégés of late Malam Aminu Kano. At over 80 years Allah has been so kind to Yakasai. The best he could do now is to play the role of an elder statesman rather than campaigning for Jonathan to contest in 2015. The issue in Nigeria today has gone beyond Jonathan’s ambition. We are talking about the survival of Nigeria.
“Thousands of lives are being lost to insurgency in the north-east. The best we expects from him when he gets audience with Jonathan is to give advice on how to solve the insurgency and other socio –economic challenges facing Nigeria and the north in particular. But a situation where he will become partisan and showing support for the ambition of the President does not augur well. I am pained by the level of insults and name-calling he is being subjected to by people who are his grandchildren in face book, discussion fora and other social media. He has paid his dues in politics and service to the fatherland. This is not the time to play to the gallery. He should retire quietly so that posterity will be kind to him”, he said.
Umar said the issue of Jonathan ambition has sharply divided the north adding that people like him who are considered as northern elders should not be seen as  working against his people.
