The president of the Chartered Institute of Project Management of Nigeria, Prince Akinola Babalola has said that one of the reasons for projects failure in Nigeria is quarks parading themselves as project managers.
He said that many unprofessional individuals parade themselves as project managers, just because of one kind of artisan work they do while feeling that they can handle different professional fields.
He stated this at a three-day training and induction programme with the theme: Adopting Project Management Methodologies and Technology in Delivery Project in Nigeria’s Unique Environment,’’ held in Abuja yesterday.
According to him, CIBMN is relatively new in Nigeria at the moment, “Unfortunately, we crawled a bit before we got up on our feet and started working. That has affected our regulatory function which is yet to take off fully.

“Of course, we understand project management is key because we have started to advocate and try to implement now is to ensure that the right people take up the role and responsibility of managing projects.
“At the institute our focus is on capacity development, ensuring that people are well-trained. Competent hands are saddled with the responsibility. Enough of quarks parading themselves as project managers, and that is the reason why projects fail because some guys just wake up in the morning because they managed one of the projects.
“Because they have done mason work or carpenter or they are builders they just assume the role of a project manager and they feel they can handle different professional fields and think they can coordinate and deploy them and manage them, no. There are certain principles that need to be followed to the letter. Project management is a detailed profession, we follow principles strictly to enable us to deliver on any project that is undertaken,’’ he added.
Meanwhile, the Registrar of the CIPMN, Henry Ifeanyi Mbadiwe said 400 members were inducted into the CIPMN as project managers.
