Quackery slowing Nigeria’s economic growth – NIEEE

The Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (NIEEE) has said that quackery is a major setback in the Nigerian economy and the construction sector as unqualified individuals find themselves carrying out major electrical installations on properties and other construction sites.

The president of the NIEEE, Felix Olu, who said this in Abuja at the fellowship conferment for its members, emphasized the need to sanitise the entire sector, adding that unqualified persons are everywhere posing as electrical engineers.

“Today, we have cases of properties burning down and goods razed in markets and supermarkets as a result of electrical faults, which is a pure case of quackery as nonprofessionals have infiltrated the field, causing loss of properties worth millions,” he said.

The guest speaker at the event, Professor James Agajo, highlighted the need for engineers to be at the forefront of innovation and advancement in Nigeria.

Agajo said, “It is essential to up-skill and recognise that continuous learning is a responsibility in our field. It is our responsibility as individuals to make sure that we meet up with what our contemporaries in other parts of the world are doing.”
