PWDs empowered, get startup packs to start business

No fewer than 30 Persons With Disability (PWD) have been empowered on vocational training by a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Sight Savers International (SSI), in Kano State.

At the graduation ceremony yesterday, the Country Director of SSI, Mr Isyaku Sunday, said the training was a collaboration between SSI and the Industrial Skills Training Centre of the Industrial Trust Fund.

Mr Isyaku said they decided to include the PWDs in their intervention projects in order to make the labour market disability-inclusive.

He said, “We are building the disability confidence of employers, job readiness of young persons with disabilities and supporting government.”

He added that, “We know there are thousands of formal employments in the informal sector, and as a result of the training, we believe PWDs can begin to earn living, feed their families and contribute to the nation’s socio- economic growth.”

He called on the beneficiaries to apply the knowledge they had gathered during the training and make use of the startup packs judiciously.

The Training Manager of the Industrial Skills Training Centre, Mr Abel Okun Oche, said the PWDs were trained on three vocational skills: computer repair, catering and event management, as well as poultry production.

He added that, “We carefully selected these courses as we believe they are of much relevance in the labour market.”
