The Chief Imam of Kano Road Jummah Mosque, Sheikh Habeeb Umar, has identified purposeful leadership as the way forward to attaining the dividends of democracy in the country.
Speaking at a Ramadan lecture organised by the Kaduna branch of the Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Society with the topic, “Good Governance and Democratic Dividends in Nigeria: Islamic Perspective,” the cleric identified piety, principles, doctrine and values from Islamic perspective as the backbone for good governance.

“There is need to have good understanding of the constitution and work intelligently through its provision, enlightenment of Muslims to imbibe the culture of good relationship between them and the non-Muslims so as to provide better understanding and also the need to work hard in strategizing the political mood and service delivery based on equity and equality,” he said.
Umar said sincere patriotism should be the guiding principle for any democracy rather than selfishness, adding that money politics should be totally discouraged and abhorred by everyone.
In his remarks, the chairman of the society, Alhaji Abdulhakeem Sani, said the organisation chose the topic because only good governance could lead to a meaningful society, as the only way to attain development.
