Pupils boycott classes as rainstorm destroys school in Ondo

Pupils of St David’s Anglican Primary School, Ijomu, Akure, Ondo State, have boycotted academic activities following a rainstorm which wreaked havoc on the school’s buildings a few days ago.

The rainstorm removed the roofs of the classrooms and other buildings in the school.

City & Crime gathered that no fewer than 100 pupils of the school who were affected by the incident have been unable to continue learning in the affected classes.

One of the teachers in the school who spoke under condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident to our reporter on Tuesday.

She said, “The attendance of the pupils has dropped drastically since the rainstorm destroyed their classes.

“Even this week, the examination was supposed to start but we are surprised that the pupils did not come to school.”

She noted that effort by the school’s management to convince some parents to bring their children back to school was not successful.

Confirming the incident, the Head Teacher of the school, Mrs Feyisola Otetubi, described it as pathetic.

Princess Otetubi, however, said officials from the State Ministry of Education and the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) visited the school with the promise to start rehabilitation works.

Meanwhile, the state government has approved the release of funds for the immediate renovation of the affected buildings in the school.

The Chairman of the UBEB, Mr Victor Olabimtan, disclosed this to our reporter in a phone chat while reacting to the destruction done to the school by the rainstorm.
