Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea have qualified for the semi finals of the UEFA champions league despite both clubs suffering defeats in their second leg encounters.
PSG lost 0-1 to Bayern Munich at the Parc des Princes but advanced on away goals rule, Eric Choupo-Moting’s goal not enough as the UCL holders crashed out at the quarter finals stage.
Bayern’s exit makes it the fifth consecutive time the Germans have lost the first leg and then crashed out of Europe’s premier club competition.
Mauricio Pochettino’s PSG dominated an entertaining first and had a plethora of chances to score but were undone by wayward defending and saves from Manuel Neuer.
Neymar Jr also hit the bar and post but Bayern punished PSG with five minutes left in the half, Choupo-Moting rising highest to head home the rebound off David Alaba’s shot.
The hosts slowed down the game in the second period that was short on clear-cut chances and they had to show defensive character against a Bayern side that kept on flooding into attack.
Kylian Mbappe also had a goal ruled out for offside as PSG avenged last season’s UCL final loss and advanced into their third UCL semi final in the club’s history.
At the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, Chelsea conceded deep into injury time in their UCL quarter final second leg tie against Porto, Mehdi Taremi’s audacious overhead kick not enough to overturn the two-goal deficit of the Portuguese side.
Both sides were unspectacular in the encounter and while Chelsea seemed to be in control, it was Porto’s Iranian striker that scored a goal of the season contender for the lacklustre visitors.
RESULTS
Paris Saint-Germain 0-1 Bayern Munich (PSG win on away goals rule after 3-3 aggregate scoreline)
