Provost calls for promotion of horticulture to fight climate change

The Provost, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) College of Agriculture, Kabba, Kogi State, Dr Aderonke Mohammed,  has called for the promotion and adoption of horticulture to address climate change and food security in the country.

The provost who was speaking against the backdrop of the forthcoming 35th annual conference of Horticultural Society of Nigeria (HORTSON) said there was need for more awareness on science and art of gardening in the country.

She said that the practice would ensure a greener Nigeria and address a lot of agricultural challenges with food production and improvement, crop improvement, protection and biotechnology, amongst others.

Dr Mohammed said there were numerous advantages to be derived from the practice in enhancing a better eco-friendly environment but with limited awareness on the part of the people, little attention is paid to it.

“The symbiotic existence between man and plants placed horticulture in a vantage position that should be sought after, encouraged and practised by all to enhance the well-being of man.

Our correspondent reports that the conference scheduled for October 29 to 2nd November, will also feature capacity building, policy framework and food security among others.
