The protesters who were led by the national coordinator of the group, Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin, had earlier gathered at the premises of the Lagos Television in Agidingbi at about 9:00am where they watched the video clip of two women who were humiliated for allegedly stealing pepper at Ejigbo area of Lagos.
In the video which was also watched by journalists, the women were stripped naked by some men who thoroughly beat them with canes before pouring a pepperish substance on them. Addressing journalists, Odumakin said barbaric acts against women had got to stop.
“This Ejigbo 2 is the beginning of a series other protests we will be leading across the country against rights violation of women. When the video clip you watched went on the internet, the chairman of Ejigbo Local Council Development Area under whose council this terrible act took place, came out and said the event took place in February 2013 and that the elderly woman is a wife of a palm wine tapper while the other is her step daughter. But he failed to tell the world what has been done to get justice for them,” Okei-Odumakin said.
Odumakin said the failure of the council boss actually necessitated her group to take up the case and they would ensure that the state House of Assembly investigates the matter and bring the offenders to book. Deputy Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Kolawole Taiwo, who collected the petition from the protesters assured them that the lawmakers would soon inaugurate a committee to look into the matter.
