Protesters demand APC chairmanship return to North Central

Dozens of protesters staged a peaceful demonstration at the Nasarawa State Government House in Lafia, urging the leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to return the party’s chairmanship to the North Central zone, which lost the position following Senator Abdullahi Adamu’s resignation.

The protest occurred during a meeting of APC stakeholders from the North Central zone held in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, over the weekend.

The meeting was attended by high-profile figures including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the APC National Chairman, as well as governors and lawmakers from the zone.

Protesters, including members of the Coalition of APC North Central Stakeholders, marched to the meeting venue chanting “Ganduje must go.”

The protest reflects the ongoing contention since Ganduje assumed the party’s leadership following Adamu’s resignation in July 2023.

North Central APC members have been advocating for the completion of Adamu’s tenure by a representative from their zone.

Sani Ibrahim Jigas, a member of the Coalition of APC North Central Stakeholders, who addressed newsmen on behalf of the protesters, said, “We want the APC to work according to the party’s constitution by returning the chairmanship to the North Central. Let’s finish our tenure.”

He emphasised that the North Central zone deserves the party’s chairmanship, highlighting that they have produced five APC governors out of six states and contributed significantly to President Tinubu’s success in the 2023 election.

It was gathered that some of the protesters were arrested by the police and were later released on Sunday.
