Protection of senior citizens’ rights, key to Nigeria’s progress – NSCC

The National Senior Citizens Centre (NSCC) Thursday described the protection of senior citizens’ rights and paying attention to their well-being as one of the key factors towards improving Nigeria’s progression.

The Director-General, Emem Omokaro, who stated this in Abuja during launch of a campaign in support of the senior citizens’ themed “Elder Justice Charter”, said it is time to bring out steps towards improving the quality of life of elderly ones.

The programme, an inter-generational networking on elder justice advocacy aimed at building a national youth support network for aged persons, was in collaboration with the federal ministry of youth and sports.

Speaking at the event, Omokaro said the platform was to mobilise, sensitise and educate stakeholders on ageing population, challenges of ageism, rights of older persons and the power of networking.

He added that the campaign would mobilise public-private-partnership to address abuse, neglect and violence against older persons, stressing that to strengthen and protect the rights of older persons, there is need to promote and build support networks for senior citizens.
